The Finance industry covers a very broad spectrum. In fact, I think the finance industry covers a broader spectrum than most people realize. There are many different sectors in the Finance Industry, such as Investment Banking, Consulting, Private Equity, Venture Capital, Investment Management, Hedge Funds, Financial Advisors and Corporate Finance. There are actually more than 30 sectors of the Finance industry. If you would like to find out more about them a simple Google search can take you right where you need to go.
Now that you know about the various sectors you are probably thinking, “Well how do I get into them?” That is a good question. First, you must decide which sector you want to get into. If you do not have an idea already I suggest reading about the different sectors, what the job entails and choosing the one that resonates with you. Once you figure out what sector you will have to think about what you are going to do about schooling. Not every job in the finance industry will require schooling but most will. Find out how much schooling it takes to get in the sector that you chose. You have to decide if you will be able to do the schooling required and if you will be able to pay for it.
There are many different ways about going to get a job in the finance industry. You should not wait until you are out of school to start looking for a job though. The most important thing you should be doing is networking. Get the names of people that are in your business classes so they can let you know about any job openings. During the summer get into an internship. Most companies usually give the intern a job in the company once they are done with their schooling. Keep your GPA up. Do all of these things and your chances of getting a job in the finance industry will go through the roof. Plant seeds early on so you can see the fruits of your labor later on.
